Hi all.

Not sure if I'm looking in the wrong place or if it's just not available. I've just got a Vodafone 845 and noticed that a few Google apps (Goggles and 'Chrome to Phone') need Android 2.2 but the 845 has 2.1.

Is there somewhere I can go to get the update or is it not actually available for this phone yet?

Cheers.

P.S. oh yeah guess I better update my 'devices' on my profile.

Thanks, but can you advise if you are aware if and when there will be an update to 2.2? Or is the 845 only planned to have 2.1?

It would be nice to have, the major feature for me would be the ability to run apps straight from SD (not backing them up, really installing and running from 'external storage').

How do updates work? are they made available via air? I guess a whole update like that would be fairly big to send and would require a lot of space on the internal SD. I don't even know whether updating the rom is technically possible (using a bootloader?)

Where to start!

Short answer, 'it depends'.

Google updates the OS and then releases it to the vendors. (In your case Huawei)

They do what they need to with drivers and hardware optimisation and UI customisations and then can either update direct via their own channels or if part of a carrier agreement they need to ship to their carrier partners for testing and signoff and eventual release.

Updates can be OTA (over the Air) or via download and PC software. Samsung and Sony Ericsson seem to favour the latter.

Having said all that, there are some home baked custom 2.2 ROMS out there for the 845

Basically your choice is Celestial Teapot or Mr Edition

With all custom roms, you run the slight risk of bricking your phone and you will void your warranty.

If you dig around in Menu -> Settings on the 845, go into "SD Card & Phone Storage". At the bottom of that screen will be a "Software Upgrade" menu item. If you select that, it will ask you to confirm or cancel a firmware upgrade you will have previously copied to the sdcard in your phone....and presumably have downloaded from a web site - probably Huawei's. You would have copied it to the sdcard via the USB cable or some app that lets you access your phone (like "SwiFTP"), or lets your phone access files on a PC (Like "Estrongs File Explorer").

I don't know of any official updates at present. The phone is still fairly new.

If you:

1. Go to www.huaweidevice.com
2. Click on "Service Center"
3. On the Service Centre page, under "Download", click on "Software"

You should see a list of file to download. Near the bottom is the firmware currently on the Vodafone 845.

"V845 V845 V100R001NZLC02B233SP01(Ne w Zealand Vodafone) Host Software 2010-09-19"

If you want a back-up copy of what you already have, this would be it. Useful if you're going to go and play with other firmware. :-)

Thank you Rob and Linux Lover,

the beauty of these device is that they're so cheap. So I'm planning to do everything I can with 2.1, start developing my own apps and then buy another more expensive phone so I can do whatever I like with the 845. I'm not too fussy at this stage with the lack of features that were introduced later in 2.2.

Having grown up with MS (and DR) Dos I've been spending my youth (sad, isn't it) putting device drivers on high memory and overclocking via bios settings.
At the end of the day the gain was minimal.
Rembember when we had to compress stuff on the hd on the fly in order to gain some MB?
That age is back again with mobiles. Think about the debate between standalone or web based apps.
Standalone apps are winning on Android at the moment, given they can access sensors etc.
We'll see what happens next

E.

Today a sales rep in a Vodafone store (First mobile) told my mate that her 845 would soon be updated to 2.3
She neglected to get the sales persons name so i can't go back in and interrogate them
