Hi, I'm new here and I'm a user of android phone and I have a question with it.

I've just moved to a new simcard and for some reason a new icon has appeared in the notification area.
Its a picture of a simcard with a small cog wheel in the bottom left of it.

I cant get rid of it and cant find anywhere a list of notification icons.

I cant clear it, i can select the icon in the dropdown notification listing but it does nothing.

I've found another person on XDA-Developers and androidforums with the same thing. They are with the same carrier as me, Vodafone NZ.

Is there solution for this???? As it is quite annoying thing!!

I have seen this on an X10 mini pro, it comes and goes and I'm not sure what it'd for. Nothing bad seems to come from ignoring it though. I think it's just something that happens with android from time to time. I have also seen it on my HTC Magic, but I have not been using it long enough to know if it's a consistent thing or not.

I had it on the Samsung Galaxy S and it was due to the fact it "wanted to know" if I wanted to import the contacts from it (wicked welcomes, Vodafone Live, Customer Service).

It might be a ICON advising the SIM has a STK app installed on it which the SIM does

The general consensus out there in forum land is that it is something to do with the SIM toolkit and seems to be report more often on new VFNZ sims than any other carrier anywhere.

Read into that what you will.

It seems to be a benign notification in that there doesn't seem to be any negative impact.

Hi, Download Advanced Task Manager.apk from Android market, then you can end the STK service. Hope this helps

Ok, that only stopped it temporarily, found the permanent fix.. search the web for Titanium backup pro.apk download it, once installed go to backup/restore tab and find SIM toolkit and "FREEZE" it... this WILL fix it once and for all.. you can of course unfreeze it later if you want.. I have done this and no more popups :-)

What sort of phone have you got? Some allow a default setting for new contacts...and this can provoke the SIM notification endlessly. Other phones don't offer this feature.

If you go into Contacts.....and then do Menu -> More -> Settings......Under "Save new contacts to.." it probably has a default setting of "ask". So the Notification is always "asking".....only not in a way that any living human will ever understand as a request.

If you set this to any of the other options (I always set new contacts to go to my Google account) then this notification will stop appearing. A colleague at work had *exactly* this issue yesterday...and this was his problem. I'd never seen it because I had changed the default for new contacts to something other than "ask". We both have Galaxy S phones. The menus on your phone may not be laid out exactly the same, but you will very likely find this is the problem.....however you get to the setting for where to put new Contacts within the Contacts app.

[Update: I've checked my Vodafone 845 and my Nexus One. Neither one of them has the setting I'm describing as they do not allow for a default setting for a new Contact. Instead, they require you to set where each new Contact is to be stored. But the Galaxy S does allow for a default setting to be set...and this was the phone showing a SIM notification that wouldn't go away...though it could be killed with a Task Manager....but it would always re-appear later. Neither of these other phones ever shows me a persistent SIM notification when I switch SIMs...and I do that frequently.]

It's nothing to do with the SIM Toolkit.....My colleague at work told me this yesterday....and it didn't make sense. He said it seemed to come up when someone sent him a text or called him. I asked if they were in his Contacts....he said sometimes. Hmm....

So I sent him a txt from a number I have that he doesn't know. Bingo....SIM notification. So we checked the setting for what to do with new contacts...and found it was set to "ask always". Instead, we changed his to Corporate Contacts. Mine is set to Google Contacts....and I've never seen it. He stopped seeing that notification once he changed the setting to something other than "Ask always".

If this doesn't work, then maybe we're talking about different problems with the same symptom.

Yeah i have this problem too. Sim card notification with cog wheel on right though. It doesn't seem to be having a negative impact on the phone so i just ignore. I also use titanium back up pro to freeze when it gets annoying but you'll need to root your phone. Search up "Superoneclick" to do this.

Hi,

After a mission, I have found a solution for NON ROOTED android phone
I have now used this process successfully on both the HTC Desire and HTC Desire HD (non rooted phones), it has been in use for a week without any problems, and better still that annoying Icon notiofication has gone (noting that this seems to be only an issue with the NZ SIM cards).

Following setps
1. Locate the following .apk file "com.modaco.visionaryplus.r14.apk" on the web download it to your pc then install on your phone.. do not open yet on your phone
2. Load Titanium Backup Pro.apk ... do not open yet
3. You will need to go to "Settings>manage applications>development and turn on Debugging
4. Reboot your phone if you have the Sim card icon/clog showing in the notifcation area (if not go to step 5)
5. Once phone has rebooted locate Visionary+ app and open
6. Select "Temproot Now"
7. Application will process, you will get a triangle showing "rooting device" (IMPORTANT: This is a temp root only and it will NOT permanently root your device)
8. Once finshed you will come back to the main Visionary app screen, close this then
9. Locate and Open Titanium back up Pro (TBUP)
10. Select the "Problems" button at the bottom of this app and install busybox ("Yes do it")
11. once complete you will need to go back into TBUP pro app and then select the middle tab of TBUP (at the top), scroll down and locate "SIM Toolkit" select it, and then you will get the option to freeze it .. "FREEZE IT"
12. Exit TBUP, then exit back to main screen of your phone
13. Restart phone... this will remove the Temp root
14. repeat step 3, to turn off debugging
15. Icon does not appear again :-)

NOTE: This has been now used on numerous HTC phones and it works.. be interested to hear if it works on other makes. If it doesn't work on your drop me a post.

Hi,

No reason, but I would do the backup before you reboot the phone from titanium, as once you reboot phone you will no longer have ROOT access or be able to use Titanium.

I spoke to Vodafone, and because my phone was not bought through "Vodafone", it was not supported and they would therefore not help. (NB: Given it is actually SIM CARD related , and in particular to the STK service on the NZ sim card and NOTHING to do with the phone at all, which I did explain no joy). Hence I spent a bit of time investigating this issue myself and I have located a fix that works and removes its, the fix is located within this forum post.

I have the same problem (I am in Canada)
So after doing a factory reset and everything I could think of trying, I got my cell carrier (Videotron) to replace my cellphone, brand new, unopen box, new SIM card, new SD card and all... Well guess what... the icon is still there... on the brand new phone (Motorola XT720; Android 2.1)
So what could this be and how do we fix this?
