Telecom Numbers Not Displaying As Contacts Name After 3.0 Update FIX is coming in 3.1

I have recently updated my iPhone 3G to the new 3.0 OS and new carrier settings, and rebooted to get the MMS function etc working.

However I've found now when any saved contact of mine with a telecom number calling me or sending me a text message, my iPhone will only display the number and not the contact name as it should. It appears that any contact I have with a telecom number saved that starts with 027... will do this, yet if the number reads +64 27... then it's fine.

Does this mean I have to go through my 500 plus contacts and change any telecom numbers to start with +64 27 ... etc?
Anyone know why the iPhone will not recognise a contact with 027... at the start of the number?

I had also noticed this before the update if the number had 8 digits after 027 or even 021.

Would be great if anyone can shed some insight to help resolve this, as when texting people their replies are a completely new conversation. Can be quite frustrating. dry.gif

Do they display correctly in your contact list JR216?

Have you tried a restore of the device?

THanks

If I have someone with a telecom number saved in my contacts list for example: 'Joe Bloggs - 0275551234', and this person texts me, I get a text from "+64 275551234", not from "Joe Bloggs". However if I change this contacts number to read +64 275551234, then it will display this persons name when I get a text or call.
It appears any contact with 021 and +64 21 is fine.

Have yet to try a restore of the device as I need to allocate the time to reinstall all my music and apps afterwards, then organise them again. Will do so soon and see.
However as I had also experienced this before with saved contacts 021 or 027 followed by 8 digits, this was still happening before and after a previous restore from another issue I had with the phone.

Weird huh?

Thanks for your reply too.

This may not solve your problem but....
I've had a similar issue on a Nokia which is now long sorted. From what I remember if I had a contact in my phone contact list AND in my SIM phone book then it would only show the incoming Callers number.
My guess was that because of the number conflict (same num stored in two places) the software choose only to show the Calling number and not any associated detail.

You only get to make each decision once... think about it...

This will not be an issue with the iphone 3G AFAIK. The iphone doesn't read contacts from the SIM (unless you're exporting them to the contact list) But I'm sure the OP appreciates the thought

If you remove someone from your contacts list who has an 021 number, what displays when they send you a text or make a call? +6421 or 021? I'd recommend always storing your numbers in the +64 format in any case. Very strange though.

Hi there,

I have the same problem as well. I copied all my SIM Contacts, setup all my contacts. Now after a few weeks of having the phone I updated to 3.0. If I receive a new message from someone, it will start a new conversation with there number with a gap (As stated above), this is for both Vodafone and TC numbers. All I do is just add them to the contact again, rather annoying.

For what it's worth, my Vodafone was not calling my son's new TC XT phone until I removed the old contact in my phone and re-entered it in identical fashion. Weird.

If a contact is removed, it will show +64 21... or +64 27... just as if it was a strangers number never seen before.

Yeah I can't make sense of it as it's only doing it to Telecom numbers or any number with 8 digits after 021/027. Figured it was a Vodafone (carrier) thing?

Good to see I'm not the only one experiencing this problem, sorry to hear though that you are too. However it just seems to be Telecom numbers and the 11 digit numbers for me.
Be nice if anyone from Vodafone had any thoughts or experience also on the matter?

It is rather annoying huh, I just happen to be getting a lot of mates on Telecom numbers texting me lately and I have to figure out who they are.

I too have had this happen after update.
I have changed ALL of my MANY 027 numbers to +64 27 format so they show up in the text messages, but then had one of these numbers call me last night which showed up as 027 which would not name the caller. Was this part of the carrier update or something?!? Really not impressed!

Ok,

I have spoken with Vodafone iPhone Support, apparantly they are aware of this and the guy had himself experienced it. He said since the new 3.0 update, an iPhone won't recognise +64 27.... numbers as a saved contact if the contacts number starts with 0.
He found it not to be such a big deal and I should change all my contacts numbers to read +64 27....

Bit annoying,

...however he said he will make it a concern to get resolved, but its not a priority and would be sometime untill a new update will fix it.

Hi there

I store all of my contacts in the +64 27 format already and still get this issue.

Why the hell would they think it is not a priority?!? I have forked out so much of my hard earned money to come back to Vodafone now that I have an iPhone, it seems that they don't care what they do to their own customers if there is anything to do with Telecom.
I had changed ALL of my MANY 027 numbers in my phone from 027 to +6427 as soon as I noticed the text messages not showing up. But now the phone calls from these 027 numbers don't show the contact. So looks like it's either one or the other!
Is anybody else having this one or the other issue?

I'm having the same issue. Texting only recognises +64 but phone calls only recognise 027. Therefore I'm having to create double contacts in my address book. This is a huge hassle and stuffs up the point of having the sent and received texts in the same message as they are now 2 separate messages. Vodafone needs to fix this asap. Its not fair that we're forking out big money for the phone and paying $80+ a month for these minor problems to ruin everything. Vodafone needs to make this a priority. Even if they make it that calling is seen as +64 as well will fix everything.

Can a vodafone admin address this point please?

Just thought I'd throw my 2 cents in on this one. I too am having the problem. It is effecting contacts on either the Vodafone OR Telecom network. It used to work just fine before the 3.0 update. It's clear there was a lack of ample testing with the 3.0 beta and it would be great if VF could release a new carrier bundle to address the problem. To me - and the few others I know of with iPhones that immediately noticed the difference - it is an important fix and one VF should be proactive about making. Considering the ease with which those of us on Prepay can port to XT it makes sense for VF to lift their game a little and actively resolve problems like this when they (and only they) have the power to do so. If for no other reason, then in the interests of providing desirable customer service and keeping us loyal.

Have you not realised the software is written by apple and not Vodafone

Apple released the software through itunes Vodafone clearly had no say in the matter

Why don't you bring up your issues with Apple Vodafone is the carrier only

Did Vodafone not create the carrier settings file? Did a previous update to this same carrier settings file on the 2.2 firmware not fix the same problem once before in the past? Has one of the comments above not already mentioned that Vodafone (not Apple) have said they will work on a fix, but it's not considered a priority? Are you sure it's Apple's responsibility to fix this issue & not Vodafone's responsibility to provide Apple with an updated carrier settings file?

As far as I can tell an updated Carrier file will not "fix" this problem as it is caused in a different place on the iPhone. It (the problem with 027 and +627) will have to be fixed (as far as I can tell) in an update of the firmware of the iPhone.

I suggest people report the bug to apple at http://bugreport.apple.com (and I presume Vodafone on behalf of their customers will pass this onto Apple as well), but I wouldn't hold by breath in getting this resolved in the iPhone quickly.

Thanks

I am also having this problem. The majority of my numbers are stored with +64 so that certainly doesn't solve the problem. I am also having the problem with 029 numbers.

I have also searched Apple support site and it doesn't seem to be a problem for other users, which leads me to think it is specific to NZ and therefore a Vodafone NZ issue.

Please can you sort this out vodafone? It is a major pain. I don't know the number of all my stalkers off by heart and may be putting myself in danger when answering wink.gif

Thanks
