3G out in Kilbirnie?

G'day

Wondering if the storm which came through Wellington on Friday knocked something on the 3G cell sites in Kilbirnie.

I've got a Nokia 6121 and a K3520 Vodem. Both have been working fine throughout the Wellington region since the storm except in Kilbirnie.

In Kilbirnie, the 6121 can't seem to pick up more than a 1 bar 3G signal and drops to 2G most of the time. The 2G cell sites which come up on the phone switch between Kilbirnie, Shelley Bay and occasionally Wellington CBD.

The Vodem is really struggling on 3G in Kilbirnie. I'm regularly getting the following error message

HTTP Error 504: Gateway Timeout
The server, while acting as a gateway or proxy, did not receive a timely response from the upstream server it accessed in attempting to complete the request
.

Takes 3 or 4 refreshes for a page to finally load.

Tried to do a speed test at http://speedtest.vodafone.co.nz/ - see the error message screenshot:

The standalone data counter I run shows download speeds between 5 and 20 k/s.

As mentioned, the same equipment was working fine in Kilbirnie pre Friday storm and still works fine elsewhere in Wellington.

Thanks and cheers, Gobit

Why is Vodafone email constantly breaking down?

Couldn't send or recieve this morning for a few hours, which was the second time within a week. Couldn't use the webmail either.... For a business being without email is worse than being without cellphones, what's the deal??!! Is Vodafone hosted email the XT network email equivalent?

Our addresses are our own domain name aliased to usernames@ihug.co.nz, would there be an advantage to changing them to vodafone.co.nz aliases, or is there any other way to improve reliability? A bigger mailbox would be nice too....
I downloaded VMB and have uninstalled and reinstalled this at least 4 times the issue:
I can connect and send receive data however after a period of time/or data it will stop receiving data. The main display of VMB shows data being sent but non being received. I have to disconnect and then reconnect to get data coming in again.

Vodafone supported suggested it was the websites I do not believe this as I can tether my iPhone and go to the same sites with out issue.

Shared mobile broadband plans

Howdy ho,

With the iPad nearing arrival (via importers, I 'spose) I wanted to kick up the idea of shared mobile broadband plans. I'm currently on a Mega plan (with an unsubsidised 3G S) with a 1GB addon on an open term. I don't particularly want to pay for /another/ plan (or even prepay) on an iPad SIM, mainly due to the fact that I'm already paying $60 for my internet on my iPhone. So, is there any possible plans in the near future to provide additional data-only SIMs attached to the same plan? (I understand from a business point it doesn't make much sense from a business point, but if I had an extra SIM for my iPad and Vodem I'd probably move to a bigger plan.)

There's always the MiFi, but that's too much fuss. Happy to test this if required

NZ internet filter

Reading this story:

www.theregister.co.uk/2010/03/12/new_zealand_internet_filter/

New Zealand’s internet filtering system went live last month – but the government forgot to mention this to its electorate until its hand was forced by online freedom campaign, Tech Liberty.

For those who have not heard about it: the NZ government will now filter all internet traffic. And block access to things they deem inappropriate. If you are not concerned about that, let me tell you that by the time you will have reasons for concern, it will be too late.

I became very concerned as it appears Vodafone will signup for this as well. I don't want all my requests have to go through a single point of failure. And as a professional, how can I debug problems if there is some watchdog in the middle looking at all my requests?

I urge Vodafone strongly to either not sign up at all or given customers the choice to have their traffic filtered.

And on the idiots who think we're so stupid to believe that we need this filtering so we can't access child porn: how hard is it to take down child porn sites? The entire year we're bombarded by articles how vulnerable the internet is. Supposedly the Internet can be brought down by a few hackers in China, but the mightiest governments in the world can't take down a few child porn sites.

Still having issues. What can I do?

I am still having problems with the speeds I am getting. This has been well documented on this forum over the last 11 months. Sometimes the speed is okay and I can access some websites but most of the time the websites take quite a while to load or won't at all with my browser reffering me to an 'aol' search engine. I get one bar coverage at most but generally it sits on 'none' coverage.

I have also had many issues with getting a steady connection particularly in the last couple of months. My vodem is constantly disconnecting with the vodem stick flashing green when it does so. This often happens multiple times each session. Sometimes I cannot even get a connection to start with.

What can I do?? It just doesn't seem like a connection worthy of the $70 I spend each month for. Surely, you must be able to see that I am not having much luck with this connection.

Hi, when I signed up with Vodafone, there was a promo offering 3 months free access. I thought, this is great! I selected txt for my billing notification. For 3 months, I received a txt advising of $0.00 balance. Then the txt's stopped. Six months after the 3 months free is over, and no notifications since, I have a bill for $1500! Now I know there is no free lunch, but this was supposed to be linked to my other Vodafone account but wasn't! I thought I would post here rather than try the call center. I'm not a happy Vodafone customer at the moment, a bit of warning would be helpful, instead of the terse "pay now or be cut off"!

hi there,
my july 2008 iPhone 3G's home button has finally given up the ghost. rubbish bit of hardware design for such a fundamental function. anyway, i've been backwards and forwards between you guys and the retailer i originally purchased it from - without any satisfactory results whatsoever - so please don't ask me to do this again.
i know these things can be replaced - i've done some research online.
what i'd really like to know is 'specifically' who to contact here in NZ to get this fixed - that is if it's not going to cost half the price of a new phone, or take a month?
so, can you help me?
please.
thanks in advance.

Porting VFX VoIP number to Vodafone POTS. Is it possible

Hi folks,

I have posted this on geekzone, and am told it is possible by the people on there, but Vodafone customer service staff have been unable to assist, so i'm hoping one of you fine Vodafone Mods or Admins can help me.

I currently have Xnet Fusion Naked DSL and their VFX VoIP service, and want to go back to a POTS phone with a Vodafone Phone and Broadband package. Happy to spend the $50-odd required to reconnect my landline and ADSL provisioning costs.

My question is:

Can I get my VFX number ported to be my landline number with Vodafone?

It was NOT ported from my landline back when I converted to this service, but merely a number WXC assigned to me when I joined up.

I have spoken to sales reps from both Vodafone and Telecom, and been given a "No", but I got the sense from both Customer Service Reps didn't know their subject in this regard. Also based on the information I've been supplied on the Geekzone forum, this should be possible.

I'm hoping they may be mistaken. If so, how do I ensure the number gets ported properly?

I'm in the Red zone, although currently on a cabinet DSLAM on corner of Holly St and Victor St in Avondale, Auckaland. Check out the street view of it here:
