Vodafone network issues Saturday March 6

Media Release
8 March 2010

Vodafone network issues Saturday March 6

On Saturday, one of Vodafone’s fibre network providers FX Networks began a planned network upgrade to cabling between Taupiri and Horotiu.

The work was not expected to impact service to Vodafone customers, however a fault was triggered during the work and the automated network fail over did not take place as expected. The resulting disruption to service was clearly Vodafone’s responsibility and we acknowledge that FX networks was not at fault.

This issue affected 16 sites in the Bay of Plenty to varying degrees. Some had 2G capability, some had 3G capability intermittently. Overall Vodafone operates around 1300 cellsites throughout New Zealand.

All 16 sites were back up and running by 2.40pm on Saturday.

Vodafone would like to apologise for any impact or inconvenience caused to our customers.
Vodafone is fully focused on ensuring this kind of issue does not happen again and would like to apologise to those affected by the weekend’s events.

Vodafone welcomes Commerce Commission recommendation

Vodafone welcomes Commerce Commission recommendation

Vodafone welcomes the Commerce Commission’s recommendation to accept the industry’s commitment to reduce Mobile Termination Rates (MTRs).

The Commission has recommended the Minister of Communications accept the undertakings offered by Telecom and Vodafone in lieu of direct regulation. If the Minister accepts the recommendation the new termination rates will take effect from 1 October, 2010.

Vodafone New Zealand GM of Corporate Affairs Tom Chignell says the outcome is a pragmatic one given the uncertainty around a long regulatory process and whether the savings will end up in consumers’ pockets.

“We have always preferred commercial outcomes to regulation. New Zealand’s rates are broadly in line with Europe’s rates already and through this, and the previous investigation, the Commission has managed to elicit massive voluntary reductions in termination rates for voice and SMS.”

The Minister will now decide whether or not to accept the Commission’s recommendations and Vodafone urges him to make that decision so we can get on with the business at hand – making sure Vodafone customers have access to the best services on the country’s reliable 3G network.

Hi all,

just to let you know, we've made some changes to the credit card billing capability and now you can register one credit card against up to five Vodafone accounts.

Previously you couldn't pay for more than one account with the same card. Customers told us this is a big problem for small businesses and for families wanting to pay for more than one account with the same card.

As of today you can now register one credit card number against five different mobile accounts.

Thanks for telling us - hope this helps make managing your mobile accounts that much easier.

cheers
Vodafone and BlackBerry take Smartphones to the next level

BlackBerry fans around the country can now get their hands on the next generation BlackBerry Bold 9700.

Like its predecessor, the new BlackBerry Bold 9700 is sure to prove popular with businesses and high powered executives.

The BlackBerry Bold 9700 is supported by the company’s 900MHz extended 3G network. Vodafone’s reliable 3G Extend network operates in 97% of the places New Zealanders live work and play and switches over automatically to the 2G network, should 3G be unavailable.

Significantly lighter, the new BlackBerry Bold 9700 has slimmed down – flaunting a new sleek and stylish design. Its new 3.2MP camera and trackpad navigation also make for easy use.

BlackBerry core strengths around email and web functionality remain as key features within the device. High-speed connectivity via Vodafone’s 3G extended network, allows customers to browse the web or view email attachments faster than before while Wi-Fi support enables the BlackBerry Bold 9700 smartphone to access any available hotspots.

More recently, BlackBerry App World has also become available to New Zealanders – providing access to a growing number of applications designed specifically for BlackBerry users.
The BlackBerry Bold 9700 retails for $1099 (device only) and is available immediately through Vodafone stores nationwide or online at vodafone.co.nz. The BlackBerry Bold 9000 will be phased out across all stores and replaced with the 9700 moving forward.

Vodafone delivers final undertaking

Media Release
18 December 2009

Vodafone delivers final undertaking
SMS termination at zero, voice cut by two thirds

Vodafone has submitted what it hopes will be the final Undertaking as part of the Commerce Commission’s review of mobile termination rates.

On December 3 the Commission asked operators to work together to align their undertakings into one offer that would serve as an alternative to regulation in the Commission’s final report. Vodafone has worked to meet the Commission’s requirements and has aligned its undertaking rates with Telecom, at the levels the Commission indicated were likely to be accepted.

Vodafone had offered to reduce SMS termination rates to zero if traffic is in balance starting October 1, 2010. Previously Vodafone had offered to reduce SMS rates to 1.2 cents/TXT and has now agreed to move entirely to so-called ‘bill and keep’, making it cheaper for third party networks to terminate TXT messages on Vodafone’s network.

In terms of voice calls, Vodafone has agreed to reduce termination rates by 46% in the first year alone and will move rates down to 6 cents per minute by the start of 2014.

Vodafone’s GM of corporate affairs Tom Chignell says these rates will be based on a ‘second plus second’ rounding rather than ‘minute plus second’ basis.

“The impact to Vodafone’s business would be an immediate $50m reduction in revenues increasing over the period of the Undertaking. In a flat or declining market this is a non-trivial move.

“Vodafone has expressed concerns throughout this process that the Commission’s work is lacking in several areas and this continues to be a concern. However the Commission is both prosecution and judge in this area and, in the interests of concluding what has been a lengthy process, Vodafone has offered this Undertaking in line with the Commission’s recommendations.”
